The normal female produces androgens, estrogens, and progesterone.

Approximately 25% of these androgens are secreted from the ovaries, 25% from the adrenal cortex, and 50% from ovarian or adrenal precursors.

In the female, androgens contribute to normal hair growth at puberty and may have other important metabolic effects.
