In my opinion, the most important thing in application differs much from people people, from school to school. But generally speaking, they will consider all the materials they have and at last, if there ARE STH VERY OUTSTANDING CONCERNING you, they will surely give you what you want.
Among the most important things, including recommendaiotns, transcripts, score in GRE and Tofel, the most common standard is that TRANSCRIPT, TOFEL, GRE SUB, GRE GENERAL, then the recommendation.
The recommendation becomes the most trivial thing in this procession is because:
(1) USA professors seems already know that few letters were written by faculty members, they are always the work of students'.
(2) There are few professors in china which are famous and willing to write recommedations for students who is going out.
(3) Most professors are not so famous as to be useful in deciding the students' being admitted or not.
But we have some exceptions here. When you are lucky enough to find a famous professor, famous to be known by many professors in USA, Acedamy members are not enough in this issue though. To provide a instance, like Zhang Dainian, Chen daisun, or Zhou Guangzhao, or some people who are very close friend or holding close relations with the professors you are applying, these peoples recommendations will be extremely useful.
Anyway, the recommendations are required in the applications, so we need to choose the recommendations and the people to write it. There are 6 kinds of recommendations, each is worse then the next one.
(1) Letters written by you, signed by famous professor or professor closely related to the school you are applying;
(2)Letters written by you, corrected by those people as refered above;
(3)Letters written by you, signed by common faculty professors;
(4)letters written by you, corrected by those people as above;
(5)Letters written by famous people and you have no access to it;
(6)Letters written by common ones.
Choose you letters in the order above, and there are many sad experiences concerning the case against this basic rule: I was refused by 4 top schools just because I have used a very famous academy memeber's four reference letters. There are many other skills concerning the resume, etc. which I will cover next time. I guess as a conclusion, to make your reference letter useful, you must,
(1) Make totally good words in it, or make it more realistic, put sth. bad but not improtant at all;
(2)Choose relevant people to write it, either they do not know, or they know very well, Academy member in other fields will equals to common ones, or even worse because you can not get good words from them generally speaking.

在国外, 推荐信很受看重, 只可惜不知道从什么时候开始中国学生灵感迸发, 想到自己写好让老师签名, 以至于现在老外不太看重咱们的推荐信. 虽然如此,也不能因此就随便对待它。
写推荐信之前先要看清楚学校的要求, 不同的学校对推荐信内容的要求会有些小差别, 但基本可以不理会。开始的时候, 不妨将各个学校对推荐信要求的那段话抄下来, 互相比较一下, 如果差别不大, 那写一封就可以用到所有学校上。一般说来推荐信要求推荐人评价被推荐人academic方面的各种ability、potential及goals, 但个别学校也会有特殊要求。像今年Purdue的推荐信就指明要推荐人主要写写被推荐人除academic以外的特点, 及这些特点对将来的graduate study有什么帮助等,这种特殊要求的推荐信只能单独写一份。
写推荐信要注意以下三点:
1.数量:一般每所学校都是3封, 少数为4封或2封。在找老师前就要根据所需推荐信的数量提前想好找哪几位。
2.对推荐人有什么要求:有些学校会要求推荐人里面至少有1~2个是对你所学领域很熟悉的学者,对于我们这些全部找系里老师写的同学来说自然没有问题。
3. 推荐信虽没有字数限制, 但不成文的规定是不超过一页纸。考虑到推荐信信头、信尾还有许多修饰或要求( 像印上学校的标志、 列出推荐人所在单位和联系方式等 ), 实际可写的字数不多, 也就200~400words左右。

主申请人必须有工作推荐信,过去10年曾工作过的每个单位都必须有推荐信,并应由技术负责人出具。
使用有单位台头的信笺(中文字头也可),不必盖章。如信笺上无英文地址,则必须在信中注明地址和电话。

首先:
1)其实真的不用全部由教授签名,填写。教授最大的作用是在国外学校核实的时候有人SAY YES(各位不要骂我不尊重老师!)一般来说你准备3-4封信然后去找教授,和他说清楚,然后你回去,找同学帮你签好了,自己写也可以(就是累),而且不可能要几个教授的笔迹都一样吧?!?!?呵呵
2)在推荐人方面我的建议是找一个熟悉你人写其中一封,不一定要是很牛的人,甚至不是教授也可以,因为他们是最了解你的人,老外觉得可信。
然后找个最牛的人(可以不是你的老师)给你写一封。这里有一点要注意,就是为什么一个牛人会给你写推荐信呢?所以我们一定要写清楚你们是怎么认识的,他怎么了解,赏识你,愿意为你做推荐。这就是逻辑合理性。老外很看重!!!
3)推荐信不嫌多的!!
4)推荐信可以和申请表一起写。里面记得要在信封正面写上推荐人和对方学校的联系地址,切忌白皮信封。(白皮信封就是信封上什么都不写,就封了.起码要写上收见人"对方学校",寄见人"推荐人".还有各自地址)如果分开寄,就多花钱,而且容易丢失!!
补充:
如果申请表格没有附带信封的话,你最好用印有推荐人单位(学校,公司)名称的信封。
最后,所有的这些材料,CV,PS,REFERENCE LETTER,TANSCRIPT,都用胶片装订好,就可以寄了。最好拿一个塑料文件夹装订好。

您觉得这封推荐信怎样呢?Dr. S认为,如果这是一封为秘书介绍新工作的推荐信,那还可以接受;不过对於对於申请研究所来讲,就似乎不太够力了。首先,这封推荐信犯的一个大忌就是不够明确。
从信中我们只看到推荐人很努力地用了一大堆形容词,试著告诉入学评审委员,这个申请人很「聪明」、「很热心」、「很有潜力」、「很有分析能力」云云,相关的例证却付之厥如;接著,这封信又未能指出这个申请者这些特质与将来的研究领域有何相关,只说在这个申请人的帮助下,他可以专心在研究工作上,言下之意似乎就是告诉对方这个申请者是一个很好的秘书,而非一个有前景的研究生。
其实,只要多用一点心思,换个观察角度,单纯、琐碎的助理工作一样也可以表现出这名申请者在与研究所有关方面的能力。比方说,推荐人不妨强调他之所以雇用这个人为研究助理,是因为这个助理以前曾做过与他目前的研究领域相关的怎样的报告,表现出申请者在这个研究领域已具备的基础知识或是研究潜力。又以资料搜集的工作为例,可以强调这个这个申请者如何善用某些方法,将资料作有系统的分析整理等。
关于推荐信
一、 写推荐信应注意的事项
1、一定要用该推荐人所在公司印制的带有该公司名称的信纸;
2、要由该公司最了解您的直接上司来写,也可以请您所从事项目的负责人或与您曾经共事过的总工、高工来写,不一定找该公司的最高领导,公章可有可无,但写信人一定要签字。如果您在工作中有过与外国人合作的经历,那么请有关的外国专家开的推荐信更好。
3、推荐人的签名,最好中、英文都签;
4、最近10年内(如果您有这么长的工作经历)您工作过每个公司都有一份推荐信;
5、推荐信写完后,先不要签字,先要交来我处,确认后再拿回签字。
6、如果有几封推荐信,要用不同的风格、不同的字体,以免让移民官感觉出自一人的手笔;
7、同时请参考"SAMPLE REFERENCE LETTER"。
二、 格式
1、在信的开始应先写清写信的日期,写信人的姓名、职务和所在公司名称,以及尽可能详细的联系方式(包括办公室电话、家庭电话以及手机,传真等),此部分可写在信的左上方,也可写在信的右上方。(此部分也可写在信的结尾);
2、然后应在隔开两行的地方写:
"To Whom It May Concern:"或"Dear Sir/Madam:"
3、 隔开一行就可写正文了;
4、信的正文之后应写上"Yours truly"或"Sincerely Yours"或"Best Regards"等问侯的礼貌用语;
5、 最后是写信人姓名,并在下面留出签字的地方,如上面已经写清此人的职务等,在这里就不必写了。
三、 内容
您的英文推荐信一定要包括下面的内容
1. 您所在单位的基本情况介绍, 如公司的性质(外资,合资,中资等);单位(和所在部门)的主营业务,规模和员工人数等。
2、您在此公司工作的起止时间,一定要与你的移民申请表格及工作经历公证(如有)上的时间一致;
3、您在公司的职务和职称,您的月工资。职务尽量避免使用Manager, President, Professor等行政或教学字眼,要用能说明您是技术专业人士或研究人员的职务;详细介绍您在此公司工作期间主要从事的工作职责和在这些工作中您做了些什么项目或课题;(此部分占推荐信整个篇幅的60%-70%)
5,如果您接受过培训,您接受培训的内容,时间。
6.如果在同一单位有职位上的变更,需详细写出时间。变更后您的具体工作职责和工作项目。
7.您的工作能力和人品的评价。
